Classic Super Bikes Fleet, Hampshire. Restored and rebuilt by an experienced marque specialist in Sweden and still requiring some running in, it’s excellent in all regards except for the left silencer which has been damaged by a battery acid leak. Still awaiting workshop appraisal here, after which a video will be added, but we are reliably assured it runs faultlessly and the restoration work looks to be of a high standard. Matching numbers machine with all the Swedish documents in order so if it sells in the UK you’ll be the first owner and we’ll help with the process so it’ll be trouble-free. Recently fettled to perfection and it shows: These are rare models of course and this example is even rarer in that it not only looks good but is a joy to ride. This remarkably original late model S has a lovely history to go with it’s excellent condition inside and out. The document file includes a Silk Motorcycles invoice for the rare Churchgate Mouldings fairing which was factory-fitted from new, along with the engine bars. We have only seen one other Silk here with this fairing on and it’s recognisable by the bespoke fittings and tidy finish. A collection of old MOTs support the low mileage and the four former keepers are recorded on old V5 and V5C documents.

One is a largely original, unmolested and unrestored Vincent Black Shadow Series C, the other being one of the last purpose-built four-stroke Grand Prix race machines prior to the two-stroke influx into the class — a Linto. Watch for a full preview later this week. If it breaks through its upper estimate, the Bonhams sale should provide some fine sport for watchers.
One of the last purpose-built four-stroke Grand Prix race machines in the period before expansion chambers took on a deeper note and dominated the class as they had already done with the smaller capacity Grand Prix bikes, the Linto is named after its designer Lino Tonti. Tonti has an illustrious resume, having begun work in the pre-WW2 racing department of Benelli when it was a major racing force, and working on the four-cylinder supercharged cc racing bike which was finished just prior to WW2, never to see international competition.

Velocette Venom Clubman Registration no TPL Frame no. RS Engine no VM in Velocette introduced Clubman versions of the Venom and Viper, which featured a raised compression £
The design of the engine’s high cam with short push-rods was simpler to produce than an OHC engine. The Venom was also ahead of its time in being one of the first to have glass fibre enclosure panels from These panels proved unpopular with the traditional buyers of Velocette singles, as they extended from the front of the engine, level with the top of the crankcase, to the rear pillion footrests. This made the clutch less accessible but allowed for easy gearing changes and a range of sprockets with different numbers of teeth could be fitted by removing the sprocket cover.
The gearbox was also a novel Velocette design with a constant mesh close ratio unit that could be maintained relatively easily while still in place. Although this was effective, it was complicated to set up the alignment. The rear shock absorbers were originally made by Woodhead Monroe, then replaced by Armstrong units and eventually Girling shocks.

Due to the high values involved and possibility of fakes, a register was established by a member of the Velocette Owners Club, using production data of engine and frame numbers acquired after the factory closure, to enable owners and potential buyers to confirm provenance when selling and buying. It should be noted that this example is fully registered with accompanying documentation in the history file.
The Thruxton production model was introduced in with an advertised 41 horsepower at the crankshaft with period tests clocking it at mph without race tuning. The well-proven Venom was improved by Velocette designer and owning-family member Bertie Goodman with rearward placed footrests having brake pedal and remote gear-change linkage to suit, close-ratio four speed gearbox, alloy rims, twin-leading shoe front brake and ‘clip-on’ handle bars.
It was important for eligibility in endurance races such as the Thruxton that competing motorcycles were genuine production machines but, although the Velocette Thruxton was sold in a road-going version, it was really targeted at the racing fraternity.
Identifying engine and frame numbers, season onwards. Owners with late model BSA’s can easily identify the month and year of their machine as the factory adopted a dating system for frame and engine numbers for the season models.

From Suzuki’s Intruders came the VLX’s detailed finish, with internal complexities hidden beneath a sleek, flowing shell of bodywork punctuated by hand-polished pieces. Inside is the powerful lure of the Shadow itself. Riders still jazzed by the original Shadow archetype must look upward to the Shadow in ‘ For the VLX, there’s the throb of a cc engine with a single-pin crank, a feathery pound wet weight, a back tire about the size of New York—and a “triangulated” swing arm connected to a shock running below the seat, plus chain final drive.

The company was a great technical innovator and many of its patented designs are commonplace on motorcycles today, including the positive-stop foot shift and swinging arm suspension with hydraulic dampers. The single-cylinder machines had many advanced features, such as a throttle-controlled oil pump, long before the Japanese two strokes of the ‘s.
The factory gradually developed this machine from the “A” series, then the “H” series, followed by the model U, culminating in the model GTP in , which was produced until The GTP was a reliable lightweight motorcycle with good steering and power delivery and filled the role of an everyday commuter during its production. Velocette ‘K’ series In the early s, the company realised that it had to move away from two strokes, which were becoming thought of as cheap ride to work bikes.

OK, next step is to clean up the wheel and put the engine back in. That done, I can make some new brackets to attach the engine suspension assembly to the frame: We will tidy those up when we are sure that they fit.
Now we need some cables 32 spokes in the front wheel And here it is on the grass track: But first I need some tinware. I have a mudguard, but I need a number plate. We also have a ‘s carrier, which needs some brackets, and the mudguard stays are too short, so I will have to make some new ones; the list goes on. Starting with the number plate, we will cut out a blank from a sheet of 18 SWG cold rolled sheet bought from eBay for the Bantam project. Using a power jigsaw we cut out two rectangles, one for the number plate and another for its mounting bracket.
